You won’t have any excuse to sit at home this weekend as the cooling down weather is the time so many outside events are held, and Slidell certainly has a lot going on this weekend.
You have the following to pick from (more details on our front page):
–Touch a Truck on Saturday at SMH Cancer Center.
–The first Zydeco Fest in Slidell, coming here after four years in New Orleans, which will be all day on Saturday at Heritage Park.
–Rooftop Rendezvous on the SMH parking garage roof on Saturday night.
–Veterans Appreciation Reception on Sunday at the Slidell Auditorium.
I know most of the folks running all this and they have put a ton of work into providing great, family-friendly events for us here in Slidell.
I’ll be making rounds to get some pictures, so I hope to see you somewhere.

I have to admit I still find it interesting to see how many parents refuse to let their kids take the bus to school, and drive them to-and-from school every day.
Is this the time I launch into my “when I was a kid!!….” pitch?
Maybe not.
But I do a lot of driving around Slidell most every day and have learned which areas to avoid first thing in the morning, or later in the afternoon. I wonder if even 50 percent of public school kids take the bus anymore?
There are many schools where parents start lining up an hour before the kids get out. I actually know one parent who was determined to be first in line and kept going earlier and earlier, before finally making the first spot in line when she showed up 90 minutes early.
Guess this has to be filed under the category of “I’m getting older” since it really stuns me to see how many parents won’t make their kids get on a bus.
I’ve even noticed some parents who back into parking places really close to the school doors since I guess they don’t want their kids to walk too far to be picked up. Maybe a little toughening up for our kids might help, you think?

Do you like hot sauce?
I mean super, super hot sauce on foods?
I used to never like hot or spicy foods at all, but now I like some things that have a good zing to them, although I still don’t add hot sauce from a bottle onto food.
That might be how I am, but I have certainly seen over the years that a lot of people enjoy hot sauce, and I mean REALLY, REALLY love it.
My brother-in-law Carl used to be that way—he couldn’t put enough hot sauce on food.
But the new champion in my estimation has to be my son-in-law Jerry, and also my grandson Little Jerry. These guys can’t get things hot enough.
When my wife and I were in Florida this summer for a vacation we were shopping at different kinds of stores and one of them had an entire small room devoted to hot sauce. There were hundreds of brands, most you had never heard of. And then, they had one area in the room that had a big warning sign above the bottles saying DANGER! because the hot sauce was supposedly so hot it could be damaging if you ate much of it.
Thinking about my boy Jerry back home, I bought a bottle the lady said was among the hottest there was. It really did have this big warning on the bottle.
Once we were back home, I brought the bottle over for Jerry and he tasted it before telling me “it wasn’t too bad,” which meant he had no problem using it. I watched him dump quite a bit on his pizza, then, just to give my wife and I a taste, he put one very small drop on our finger and said we should try it.
I couldn’t imagine anything being too terrible if it was one small drop, but let me tell you, I thought I was going to pass out. That teeny drop burned so bad I was gagging and coughing. I ran to get water, which did not do a thing, then Jerry said that milk washes it away easier and after a while I survived.
We sure had a good laugh about it all, but I will make sure to not try anything like that again. Guess I’m just not the hot sauce guy in this family, that’s for sure.
