Fishing Report – September 4

NHBA Fishing Tournament Returns October 3rd
Fall fishing season is upon us here on the Northshore, and with it comes one of the area’s most anticipated fishing events. The recent cooler weather has been a welcome change for local anglers, with fishing conditions improving significantly as we move into October. Water temperatures are dropping and baitfish are moving, which means the redfish and speckled trout should be active and feeding heavily, setting up perfect conditions for the 2025 NHBA Fishing Tournament.
Presented by Abita Lumber Company & Interior/Exterior Building Supply, the tournament is set for Friday, October 3rd at Rigolets Marina from 12:00 to 4:00 PM. What makes this year’s tournament particularly special is its timing with Fair Day, allowing local youth to participate without missing school. “It’s perfectly timed so kids can hook a fish without playing hooky,” organizers note. This family-friendly approach has helped the tournament grow significantly over the years since its inception in 1998.
The tournament offers something for anglers of all skill levels with multiple divisions including Speckled Trout, Redfish, Sheepshead, Bull Red, Flounder, and the popular “Redfish with Most Spots” category. Cash prizes are substantial, with first place winners in the Redfish and Trout divisions taking home $1,000 for adults, $600 for teens, and $300 for children. Second place finishers earn $500, $300, and $150 respectively.
Anglers can launch from any navigable Louisiana waterway, with shore fishing also permitted. The weigh-in runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and participants must be in line by 3 p.m. sharp to be eligible. All fish must be caught using hook and line only, and standard LDWF regulations apply.
Registration must be completed by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, September 30, either online or by calling NHBA at (985) 882-5002. Early birds who register and pay by September 15 will receive a complimentary fishing shirt. Entry fees are $75 for adults and $25 for junior anglers 15 and under.
Beyond the competition, the event promises to be a complete family experience with exciting raffles, delicious food, and music throughout the afternoon. The tournament also serves as a great networking opportunity for those in the home building industry, bringing together NHBA members including builders, manufacturers, and suppliers.
The event is open to the public and NHBA membership is not required to participate. Charter captains are welcome but are only eligible for the Charter Captain’s Cup division. The winners will be announced at 3:30 PM on tournament day.
