SLIDELL – Salmen’s Mike Young signed to play basketball for the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers last Wednesday in the Salmen library.
On hand to see the signing were numerous friends, fellow players and family.
Coach Jay Carlin moderated the occasion and had nothing but good things to say about Young.
“There’s not a whole lot of high school basketball players that get a chance to sign a four-year scholarship. He has worked hard to get where is today. We are very proud of Mike’s accomplishments and hope he takes advantage of this great honor.”
When asked why he chose Tuskegee, Young was quick to respond.
“I liked the coaching staff, the campus and I feel that I can get a quality education there.”
Several schools were in the hunt for his talents. They included Loyola University, New Orleans, Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.
He also received offers from several junior colleges as well.
He spoke about what he learned during his career at Salmen High School.
“I had a lot of fun playing for the Spartans but I also learned some leadership skills from the coaching staff particularly from coach Carlin who is a great coach. He helped me to develop my skills and make me into the player I am today.”
