SLIDELL — Senior Elizabeth Calamari and sophomore Kristin Calamari from PJP were seeded No. 1 in the Region III Division IV Tennis Tournament held at City Park in New Orleans.
Elizabeth and Kristin were both 10-1 in regular season before heading to regionals. Kristin played singles mostly in regular season, and Elizabeth played doubles with Hannah Malus most of the season. But, the sisters wanted to pair up for their last chance at the high school regionals to compete together at state.
They had a bye in the first-round before playing a doubles team from McGehee. The Calamari sisters won in straight sets but close matches, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
In the quarterfinals, the Calamaris had to face Sarah Ford Dugal and Annie Migrew from Sacred Heart. The PJP?girls came out very strong playing aggressively by the net and had a 4-1 lead in the first set before Sacred Heart made adjustments. SH decided to drop both teammates back to play on the baseline and give no more opportunites for PJP at the net. Sacred Heart rallied all the way back to win 7-5, 6-3.
Elizabeth and Kristin lost to the second place team at regionals, but that did not stop them from qualifying for state because any team that lost in the quarterfinals still had one last chance to qualify for the state tennis meet.
The sisters went back on Tuesday to play Northlake Christian’s doubles combo of Acosta and Burke. PJP finished on top and clinched the fifth spot for state with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
The final day of the state meet is taking place today.
